Self Portrait and Portraits Part II AND Rules of Photography Part II

Self Portrait and Portraits Part II

Tips-
  1. Think about your motivation and emotions: Blankly staring at the camera rarely gets good results. Be silly, don’t be afraid to over-act. The worst that can happen is that you fill up your memory card with useless photos; but you might also find yourself with a proper gold-nugget of a self portrait.
  2. Use props such as if your a mom or dad and you are a painter, or play an instrument.
  3. Use a mirror.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Environmental portraits

I choose both of this photos for my favorites as environmental portraits because for the first one of the pregnant women she is holding her belly showing emotion and her son is showing emotion towards her and both are smiling. For the second photo i liked it because it was outside and the contrast of the Photoshop is perfect and the baby is sitting on a blanket outside in the sun smiling and you can see the photo well and she stands out because she is showing rule of thirds
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Photography self portrait
These two photos i liked for photography self portrait because for the first photo the women has another photo of her to complete the photo and different emotions. I like the second photo because of the way the little girl is focusing in class and doesn't see the camera taking the photo of her and continues paying attention

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Casual photos
I choose these two photos for my casual photo because im sure like its an everyday thing for this baby to have his pacifier in his mouth and just have that look on his face and hes not dressed up to go anywhere and is just dressed as if its a everyday thing. The second photo i choose is its a causal portrait because the guy is dressed as an everyday outfit and it doesn't look like he is going out or anything so they both are common in being casual and having the everyday outfit looks.

    Self Potraits

I think what makes these photos both good portraits is that its the persons expressing their feelings like in the first picture the man has a straight small smile face and the second photo he is smiling and pressing the button to take the photo. I think that the photos both have in common is both have facial expressions, and both are tookin in a mirror. When i get to have the camara i think what would do best to take self portraits is too go to the aerobic room and take a self portrait in the big wall of mirrors that they have in there.

    Ethics in Fashion Photography

    1. List the changes that were made to the model's face in the computer. (Look carefully)
    • Shoulder lift
    • Neck smaller
    • Longer forehead
    • Eyebraw lift
    2. Is it ethically acceptable to change a person's appearance like this in a photo? Why or why not?
I dont think it is acceptable to change somebodys apperance like this because their basically changing the persons whole face and creating a portrait by the computer and re fixing it.

    3. Are there circumstances in which it would be more ethically wrong to do this type of manipulation?
Yes if they would have added or edited something to the photo it would be wrong.

    4. What types of changes are OK, and what aren't?
Getting a spot on her face by making it darker or lighter would be OK to change and edit by photoshop.

    5. Explain what you think the differences are between fashion photography and photojournalism.
Photo journalism you can edit with photo shop for good and fasion photography your basically changing the photo to make the models look different and edit their whole face.

    6. What relationship does each type of photography have to reality, and how does this affect the ethical practice of each?
They get to edit the photo with the same app (Photoshop)

    National Geographic Warm-up

    1.

2.This photo is my favorite photo because it shows the fog that goes over the town. Also because the photo shows it clearly where the fog and buildings stand. I like it also because of how there is no clouds and the fog is the only thing lifting up into the air.

    3. I would take a photo over the view of the whole downtown  on a foggy morning while the sun is rising up and submit it into a photo contest.

    A. Photoshop has been used for good and bad ways. In some good ways it is used to removed unnecessary some parts of a photo such as smoke coming from the sky, is removed to make the photo look perfect. Other reasons it would be bad is because of having to say you tooken a great photo and then later on the people find out that you lied and edited the photo to make it look the way you want it took look.

    B. I think this type of photo is acceptable because sometimes its good to edit your photos and removed unnecessary parts of the photo that are not needed.

This photo is ethical because it is debating and has two photos that have to deal with debating and has to deal with politics..

    Abandon Theme Parks

    1. The amusement park i would like to visit would have to be 6 Flags in New Orleans. The park was under 7 ft water for about over a month. The photos that are posted onto the website look very interesting and the setting that they were tooken makes the photos look as if they were featured into a scary movie but this time their real and not just stuff that are painted or a layout printed background. It just looks scary and interesting to go to with no body there and the park being empty would be able to take creepy but cool photos with adjustments of the contrast of the camara mode.

    2.

    3.
    1. Chippewa Lake Amusment Park
    2. Okpo Land
    3. Prypiat Amusment Park
    4. Joyland
    5. Six Flags New Orleans
    4.Okpo Land

5.I would like to go take photos at Okpo Land because the setting of the outside and roller coasters make good photos that you can get different angles and how the pieces of the roller coaster are falling down and the conditions of the ducks of the kids ride the conditions of their faces would make good photos to take. Also because in the photos you take you can get the down view of the town below the amusement park.

    6. To go to this location i would have to plan a trip to Southern Korean island in Geoje . I would also need a camara, and a place in town to stay, and i also would have to have a tour person to help me around where im going and also a friend to support my photos that i take and help on how to take the photos.

American Soldier slide show and captions

    2. Click on the photos option.
    A. What is the most powerful image from the slideshows? Why?
The 24th photo on the upper right hand corner is the most powerful photo, because it shows the soldiders with their weapons up and ready and the sunset setting and them still awake and the tank that they drive in the background.

    B. What sequence of photographs is the most powerful? Why?
The most powerful sequence from the slideshow would be Chapter 4 First Assessment because it shows saying goodbye to love ones and wounds they get from iraq that need to be heeled and covered.

    c. How do the images work together to tell a story?
They work together to tell a story by showing that Men and Women are both going to fight for our country with their weapons up and ready all day to serve our country.

    3. Click on the "i" button on the upper right side of the photos to see the captions.

    A. For the photos in which Ian is the main subject of the photos, in what tense are the verbs usually written?
The verbs are usually writtin for what was going to happen or go on in the photo.

For those of you who have forgotten your verb tenses see the example below.
Present Tense: John jumps down the stairs.
Past Tense: John jumped down the stairs.

    B. How do the captions enhance the photographs?
The captions enhance the photo by saying what happened or what was going to happen in the picture.

    4. Turn off the caption feature.

    A.
Write three of your own captions to photos without looking at the caption written by the photographer. Be sure they are written in the following form. For this assignment you can make up names and facts to write your captions.

1.Solider saying Goodbyes to Family at the Airport, before leaving to iraq.

2.Solider training in iraq by doing push-ups in the snow.

3.Solider getting ankle wrapped up in Iraq from a injury.

    5. Click on "main menu." Click on "videos."
Because th characters are actually talking and its just not a picture that doesnt anwser your questions and the video they talk about whats theyre feelings and where theyre at are.

    B. In what ways are videos better than photographs? Provide an example from the Denver Post Web site.
It shows them telling they're family goodbyes, and what their emotions are. It also lets the video tell the story for itself.

    C. In what ways are photos better than videos? Provide an example from the Denver Post Web site.
It says whats happening and the main part of the photo and where the people are going or went and what theyre doing.

    A. How do these other features enhance the photographs?

    Cool video

1.The maker of the video could have gotten a lot of different angle instead of staying in the same angle of the gym. The video could have been a bit more creative with affects in the opening and to every other scene of the video.

We could do a art theme around the school and take the photos in the art room.

    2. Should we use phones only, or should we open it up to our regular cameras for those people that don't have camera phones?
We should use both cameras and our phones.

    3. Where would you want to put the mural on campus?
The AHA hallway, photo journalism class.

    Warm up

    1. What do you have to do on the camera to make this type of photo?Computer rendering

    2. Look up a Canon T3 on google and tell me if it has the ability to shoot bracketed photos? Yes
    3. Is there a place on campus we could take a series of photos like this?Courtyard

    4. Do a google image search for HDR photos and find your favorite, post it on your blog, tell me why you picked that photo and then tell me what techniques (rules of photography) the photographer used
This photo was my favorite because of how the lighting is and the contrast of the photo is and the color of the house is as if it was a rainy day.

Fixed Photo Shoot Post Shoot Reflection

    1. What did you learn about the camera when you took these photos?
What i learned about the camera when i took this photos was that the photos came out blurry when i had took them and at first the first two pics with the ISO 100 came out blurry but light, and the rest that i took when i took them at a time would get darker and darker.

Look at the photos you took, they are located here:
Jstudents > (your period) > TRIAL PRACTICE SHOOT > (folder with your name on it).
Make sure you view the photos as Extra Large Icons to see them fully.

    2. What do you notice about all the photos and the way they look?
What i notice about all the photos that i took is that they are dark and blurry.

    3. Can you tell the difference between each ISO? Explain how.
Yes i can tell the difference between each of the ISO is because ISO 100 came out dark and somewhat blurry and not focused, and after that the 6400 ISO was bright and not focused at all so as it went down from 100 it started getting lighter and not focused.

    4. What does this tell you about ISOs and what it does when you change it when you take pictures.
It tells me that ISO is the focus and brightness of the photo, and when i changed it when i take pictures it shows the brightness and lighting of the photo.

    5. What about focus? Can you see a difference in the photos? Tell me what differences and similarities you see.
What i see about the focus is that at ISO 100 the focus is not so focused but you can see whats in the photo, and as you go to a bigger number of ISO its not focused and its really blurred.

    6. Post the best photo you took on your blog. Make sure to label the following things: ISO, Shutter Speed, F-stop, Distance, Focal Length, Lighting.
     ISO-100
    SHUTTER-1/15 SEC
    SPEED-1/15 SEC
    F-STOP-F 4.5
    DISTANCE-
    FOCAL LENGTH-
    LIGHTING-

    7. What do you need to concentrate on when you go out to shoot next time when you have to shoot in Manual setting?
Next time i need to concentrate on the focus of the photo and the lighting.

Great Black and White Photographers part 3

1.) What first caught your eye while looking at your photographers photos? Is there something in particular about their photos that made you want to choose them?
What caught my attention on my photos was the angles of the photos, and how old in the back days that the photos were tooken. What also caught my attention was the setting of the photos, they look really chilled and like a normal simple life photos.

2.) Look at those 2 photos you posted last time. Use your five senses to tell me more about those photos. Answer them on your blog.

    • I see a cloudy, fall day on the photo where the tree is not bloomed and the house is in the back.
    • I smell dirt, and trees in the 2nd and 1st photos and maybe like paper for the one with the women that is walking out of a company or store.
    • I hear people talking in groups on my first photo on the second one i hear a quiet neighborhood maybe birds chirping, and on the last photo with the man walking in and the women walking out i hear people in a office of store talking to each other.
    • I taste-
    • I feel- a breeze in all the photos, and i feel like its also fall in the photos because of the way the sky is and the brightness thats in the photos.

3.) Finally, what would you like to create to show the world your great photographer. Ideas include, posters, power points, a blog, etc. You tell me what you would like to create so we can come up with a plan to share your thoughts and ideas about your photographer with your classmates and with the rest of the school.
    • To show the school or my class mates id like to make a powerpoint with his life story and a biography about him, and whats his done in life and what led him up to a good photographer.

Aperture, Shutter Speed, ISO - how do they all work?

    Aperture
    1. What part of the body should we closely relate aperture?
    Focus.
    2. Finish this sentence - the smaller the Aperture the larger the F number, the higher the Aperture the smaller the F number.
    3. In your own words tell me how aperture impacts Depth of Field?
The depth of field makes the background of the photo sharp.

    4. With the camera near you - tell me the F stops available on the lens currently attached.

    Shutter Speed
    1. If you were assigned to shoot at Blue and Gold night, which will be next month, what shutter speeds do you think you would have to shoot at the following events that night I would like you to answer the question for the following two situations:

At the beginning while the sun is still partially up and the courtyard has reasonable light
    a.) the dunking booth-high
    b.) the food eating contest-medium
    c.) the rock climbing wall-medium
    d.) someone working at a booth-low
e.) the DJ/MC working at the middle of the circle-medium
    f.) the Diamonds performance-high

Towards the end when there is no sun and has gotten dark enough that you can't see from one end of the courtyard to the other.
    a.) the dunking booth-high
    b.) the food eating contest-medium
    c.) the rock climbing wall-medium
    d.) someone working at a booth-low
e.) the DJ/MC working at the middle of the circle-medium
    f.) the Diamonds performance.-high

    2. List the three settings your camera has regarding setting shutter speed (these are found at #5 on the Shutter Speed website. Explain how each works - DO NOT COPY AND PASTE, use your own words.
    • Aperture Priority- You set the manual set the lens aperture. While the camera chooses the right speed capture for the photo.
    • Manual Mode- Is the control of shutter speed and aperture. At this mode it lets you take full control of the camera and adjust the exposure controls.
    • Program Mode- Camera automatically chooses the shutter speed of your photo based on how much light passes thru the lens.
    • Shutter Priority Mode- You get to choose the shutter speed, and the camera automatically chooses the right aperture for you based on how much light passes thru the lens.
    • ISO- you manually choose what you want it to be.

    3. With the camera near you, what are the shutter speeds available to you on that camera? You will have to turn the camera on to determine this - hopefully you can figure out what setting to put the camera on to determine the answer to this question.

    ISO
    1. What are the advantages of shoot at a higher ISO at a sporting event like basketball or a night football game?
You will get more sound noise in  the photo.

    2. What suggestions did the author make about using a low ISO?
If the ISO is low then it is less sensitive to the light.

    3. What suggestions did the author make about using a high ISO?
When you cant see the light in the photo good enough that's when you should increase the ISO.

    4. At the camera near you, please tell me what ISO's are available on your camera?
     400; 800;3200;6400;
    ISO 6400
    ISO 300

    Africa Powerpoint

My reactions to this slideshow is that Nick Brandt took AMAZING photos. My favorite photo is of the Zebras, it was my favorite because of the design of the Zebras and how the photo was only focused on the two of them and nothing else and the clouds looked very nice in the picture and how the sky was looking dark grey and light grey.

    A. Nick Brandt used a Pentax 67II with only two fixed lenses for the photos he takes in Africa.

    B. He started taking this photos after "Earth Song" was directed by Michael Jackson. The video had many animals in it, and he ended up falling in love with Animals after that video and the land of East Africa.

C.The hope of Nick taking this photo was just giving the animals equality to humans, and capturing the moments of their life's, and showing the beauty of the African Desert and the Beautiful Animals that live in there.

D."As for Africa, I went there in 1995 to direct one of the videos they did for Michael Jackson. And I absolutely fell in love with the place.  It was completely magic to me. I had to go back on holiday and that’s when I started taking my Pentax with me. I just realized there is a way of expressing my feelings without the need of somebody else’s money.  Initially, it cost a lot.  I had to direct stupid car commercials to pay for these expensive trips. I could never have taken these photos the normal way, like most wildlife photographers."-Nick Brandt

    Post Shoot Reflection

    1. What challenges did you encounter while trying to get the photos following the rules I set out for you?
Not being able to find the type of photo that i needed such as like framing i was confused on trying to hurry and find one i didn't really get a good subject of the photo.

    2. What technical aspects of photography or the assignment in general (focus, framing, holding the camera, etc.) did you find yourself thinking about the most? Provide a specific example of what you did to do this correctly.
Focus and zooming in the camera, i used it by focusing on a subject that i really wanted to get a picture of a person and i zoomed in too get them the main subject of the photo.

    3. If you could do the assignment again, what would you do differently now that you know some basic rules of photography?
I would focus on one subject in the photo, and not a group of people where who ever's looking at my photo cant tell what my subject is.

    4. What things would you do the same?
Some things i would do the same would be the mergers, and the balance.

    5. When you go out with your next set of prompts, which rule do you think will be the easiest to achieve?
I think next time the easiest would problem have to be balance, merger, rule of thirds, and simplicity.

    6. Which rule do you think will be the hardest to capture?
Framing would have to be a somewhat hardest for me to capture.

    7. What rule are you still not totally clear on and what can you do to figure out what that rule is?
Framing, and i remember the rule, but when ever i take the photos people are in a group of people and instead of a main subject for my photo i don't get one and if i do its a group of people which is hard to focus on.

    Academic Shoot

    Lines
    • I think i did this rule very well, because the lines are in a row, for both the computer screens and the chairs that are lined up.
    • The subject of this photo is The guy doing his work on the computer.
    • Yes the subject could have been a little clearer.
    • If i could do this differently i would have zoomed in more, and i would have gotten the subject a little more clear.

    Simplicity
    •  I think i did this picture very well, since i zoomed into the boys face.
    • The subject of this photo is this boy that is reading.
    • Yes the subject is fairly clear to people that are looking at this picture.
    • What i could do differently next time is get the boys arm out in the back, and should have gotten the sofa instead of that boy in the background.

    Rule of Thirds
    • I think i did good getting the subject of the photo.
    • The subject of this photo is the girl that is sitting on the sofa reading,
    • I think that its clear to see the girl sitting on the sofa reading since i had zoomed in the photo.
    • What i could have done differently was maybe gotten a different angle of the photo and got her backpack out of this photo and the background behind the sofa, to just the carpet.

    Balance
    •  I think i did good for this picture.
    • The subjects of this photo is the two people sitting on each side of the sofas.
    • Yes it is noticeable subject.
    • I could have done differently in making the guy in the left corner out of the photo and the book shelf's out of the photos.

    Framing
    • I think that i did not so good.
    • You cant tell the subject of this photo.
    • It is not clear to people viewing this photo what the subject is.
    • What i could have done better is got ONE subject and not all of these people as subjects, and focused on one person and got better frames.

    Avoiding Mergers
    • I think i did very well.
    • The boy is the subject
    • Kind of not really since other students are around.
    • What i could have done better is focused on mainly the student in the middle(whit shirt) and got the merger coming from his head.
